Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum

The Heritage Museum is located at the heart of Tarpon Springs, in shady Craig Park overlooking Spring Bayou. The serene waters of the Bayou attracted the town’s very first settlers, and many wealthy northerners of the late 19th century later built their winter homes on this “Golden Crescent.” Still very much a town landmark, the bayou is the site of the annual Greek Orthodox Epiphany Celebration and cross-diving ceremony, and the winter home of numerous manatees. This beautifully renovated facility, formerly a library, has two separate wings. The History Wing contains an exhibit about the Greek community of Tarpon Springs, as well as a display of historical and modern photographs tracing the development of Tarpon Springs, a collection of Native American archaeological artifacts from local excavations, and an exhibit detailing the history of Tarpon Springs’ Women’s Club. Visitors also can view a 16-minute documentary about the local sponge industry.

Aquarium Tarpon Springs Aquarium Tarpon Springs

The Tarpon Springs Aquarium is located at the West end of the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs, Florida, United States. It offers a variety of local aquatic and reptilian life. Shark, Alligator, Snake, and Eel showings are featured throughout the day where visitors can watch staff feed the animals and touch them. Also includes an indoor playground named Puffy's Playground. At the entrance of the aquarium is a touch pool housing diamond-back terrapin turtles, hermit crabs, sea urchins, and horseshoe crabs. The alligator exhibit is towards the front of the aquarium. One juvenile American alligator, one adult American alligator, and an Alligator snapping turtle. The juvenile alligator is sometimes held by staff, allowing guests to walk into the aquarium and pet it's back.

Craig Park Craig Park

The cultural heart of Tarpon Springs is shady Craig Park overlooking Spring Bayou. The serene waters of the Bayou attracted the town's very first settler, and many wealthy northerners of the 19th century later built their winter homes on this "Golden Crescent." Still very much a town landmark, the Bayou is the site of the annual Greek Orthodox Epiphany Celebration and cross-diving ceremony, and the winter home to numerous manatees. The Tarpon Springs Heritage is located on Craig Park. Craig Park offers a boat ramp, picnic area, playground, tennis court, and recreation center. The recreation center is only open during various programs and events. The park also features a band shell for concerts.

Lake Tarpon Lake Tarpon

Lake Tarpon is a freshwater lake located about 10 miles west of Tampa in Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs, Florida. Lake Tarpon is the largest lake in Pinellas County with a surface area of 2,500 acres. Its watershed encompasses 52 square miles including the two largest tributaries, South Creek and Brooker Creek. Lake Tarpon can be visited at Anderson Park, Chesnut Park, or several other public access points. The lake is a regional recreational destination and is renowned for its largemouth bass fishing. Although Lake Tarpon is designated as a fishing and swimming lake, it fails to meet the EPA's standards, and is therefore listed as an impaired lake because it is over polluted. Lake Tarpon is not in attainment because the waters exceed its Total Maximum Daily Load for Nutrients and as a result of excessive nutrients, low Dissolved Oxygen. Part of the pollution that enters Lake Tarpon is caused by fertilizers that have caused algae and unwanted weeds to grow. Some have suggested using liquid fertilizer to stop this. The logic being that liquid fertilizers are taken up by the plants while granular fertilizers are more likely to run off in rain water. Another problem Lake Tarpon faces is having low dissolved oxygen. As the nutrient load in the water increases, so do bacteria and other micro-organisms that consume the excess nutrients. These micro-organisms are largely aerobic. The micro-organisms consume the oxygen in the water, thus lowering the Dissolved Oxygen. The resultant decreased Dissolved Oxygen lowers biodiversity in the ecosystem. Increased nutrients in the water also increase the turbidity (murkiness) that recent samples show, and as a result can cause hypoxia (low oxygen) or a dead zone where life is unsustainable, as exemplified in the Gulf of Mexico.
